45/50: Gone by Lisa McMann

Gone  (Dream Catcher, #3)Gone by Lisa McMann
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

After reading Wake and Fade, this book wasn't good as the last book. This series started out great, but fell flat for me in the end. I'm not sure what else I would have wanted out of it, but I'm left feeling like the series ended with no climax. It just. ended.
While I appreciated learning more about Janie and her father, this book was really missing that paranormal factor. Don't be deceived, there was still some dream catching in the book, it just wasn't the same.
Gone went into the dilemma that Janie faces with her curse/gift. Should she stay with her loved ones, or should she isolate herself. The secrets she finds out from another dream catcher put things in perspective. She has two choices that are equally horrible.
Gone also went into more detail on Janie's mom which I liked. We also learned a little more about Miss Stubin, Henry, and Captain.
I will say however, that the book ended how I thought it should have. I saw the two choices Janie was faced with and hoped throughout this book she would choose one and not the other. McMann chose the same ending I would have.

44/50: Fade by Lisa McMann

Fade (Dream Catcher, #2)Fade by Lisa McMann
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Fade was better than Wake for me. Keep in mind I read Wake a long while ago.
Fade dived deeper into Janie's gift of dream catching. Although she didn't do as much of it in this book as she did in the first, it really showed the dark side to to it. We get to see a more in-depth look at what Janie's future will be like. The fear she has about her future is confirmed and you find out exactly what that holds for her.

I love that Cabel is still in her life. He has demons of his own to deal with and he struggles between that and loving Janie. They are both a little screwed up and they seem to fit well together because of that. Both never really having love in their life before, they find it with each other.

Fade goes into a case where Janie must do things she wouldn't normally do. In order to catch a sex-offender, she must put herself in harms way. This doesn't have a lot to do with her dream catching ability and it's a shame, but you do get to know her character and her ability to deal with things life throws at her. Cabel has a tough time dealing with his love putting herself in danger because she is supposed to be his safe thing in life.

The crime fighting part of this book pulled me in. The dream catching was secondary and I think it really worked.

Can't wait to read Gone to conclude this trilogy.

My Fall Book Challenge

The Nest Book Club does a quarterly challenge. I did Winter, Spring and Summer. For Fall, I'm going to participate as well, but in my own way.
Typically I would go through the list, and make my book choices based on the tasks in the challenge. I've read some interesting authors, and I've read some amazing books. I've also read some books that I wouldn't  normally read, and wasn't really sure why I was reading them. The challenges have been great and I love that there is some reading direction.
Summer has been slow for reading, but it did give me time to take some inventory of what I have around the house to read. Frenchie brought home 4 boxes of books from his parents house and we needed to find room on the shelf for them.
This led me to discover:

  • 37 books in my possession that I have not read (not including all the ones Frenchie brought home that I haven't had time to look at and catalogue... that makes me sound like a huge nerd)
  • 18 owned
  • 19 borrowed from someone else (mainly my family, so I don't feel so bad)
After ordering two more books off of Amazon last week, I decided it's time to clean house. My Fall Book Challenge will be to read as many books out of that 37 starting from October to December. No doubt I'll be asking for more books during the holiday season, so best make some room. If any of the books fit in the Nest Book Club Fall Challenge, then I'll add up the points.

I figure the best way to tackle this will be to read those books I have borrowed from people other than my family. I feel bad for keeping some of them so long and by now some people have probably forgotten I even have them.

Through this process, I am also going to try and gather up the books I have loaned to people and put them back in their rightful place.

Please view the page titled Fall Book Challenge to see a checklist of books I plan to read. There is no order to them, just a list.
